May 2010 - Preparing Books for Thread Sealing
In January, we introduced you to thread sealing, the newest binding style available at Muscle Bound Bindery. In short, plastic-coated threads are stitched through the spine of each individual signature and then heated to seal the threads. This process, performed on specialty equipment inline during folding, vastly improves the strength of each signature.
Thread sealing can be used to prepare signatures for hardcover or softcover binding. With such a wide range of downstream possibilities, here are a few important design and printing tips to keep in mind regarding thread sealing:
- Allow for seamless crossovers - Unlike standard perfect binding signatures, thread-sealed signatures are flexible enough to allow for seamless crossovers.
- No grind-off margin - Since thread-sealed signatures are entered into the perfect binding machine folded and fully prepared, they require no grinding at the spine to roughen the paper for better adhesion.
- Supply Muscle Bound with flat sheets - Thread sealing is performed inline during folding on specialty equipment. Projects must be supplied as flat sheets only for thread sealing applications.
