March 2010 - PUR Binding Means its Built to Last
Books designed to last for decades require the strongest materials available. For binding adhesives, that choice is PUR (polyurethane reactive), considered the most durable book binding adhesive on the market.
How it Works
Once applied to the spine of a book block, PUR adhesive cures by drawing moisture from air and paper. This reaction builds a polymer network that, once fully cured, creates a permanent “thermoset” - in other words, the adhesive is impervious to temperature extremes. PUR adhesive also maintains a somewhat pliable state, which offers much greater flexibility and page-pull strength than conventional EVA hotmelts.
When to Specify PUR
PUR is a versatile binding adhesive that's equally at home in softcover and hard-bound, case-in volumes. Its strength, flexibility and durability can also help overcome traditionally tough binding challenges: heavy ink and coating coverage, little or no grind-off margin, heavy-use applications and more.
Ask for PUR if your books...
- Feature paper grain perpendicular to the spine
- Include very thick or thin stocks
- Use unusual stocks, such as those with heavy clay content
- Are oblong or landscape format
- Will be digitally printed
- Include inks or coatings bleeding into the spine
- Should lay as flat as possible when opened
- Must look great and last for years!
