June 2007- Additional Uses for Case Binding
Do you know that case binding processes can be used for more than books? Many products call for the strength, durability and user-friendliness of a hard cover case. At Muscle Bound Bindery, we often produce a range of non-book products using casemaking equipment and materials. Here are a few ideas and tips to keep in mind:
Children’s Products, Carrying Cases and More
Items such as educational materials, games and carrying cases are popular casing-in applications. Part of the attraction is the versatility of case binding. These products incorporate a printed cover wrap that is film laminated to protect against the typical wear and tear a child places on their belongings.
As an alternative, the design may call for a patterned cloth, which can also be wrapped around the case and glued in place to add texture to the decoration. After case or board production additional items such as pockets and handles can be incorporated into the applications to make items unique and user-friendly.
Some other non-book, case-made products include game boards, easels and certificate holders. All of these items can include a variety of design elements and materials to suit the needs of end users.
Careful Planning Yields Results
As with any complex project, a non-book case-made application requires careful planning for the finished product to look and function properly. Communicate clearly the intended use of the piece, as this will allow us to suggest an appropriate design and wrap material. If your products will include pockets, handles and other features, we will need to know this up front as these can typically be handwork operations that may require special consideration and possible outsourcing of the handwork.
