April 2005: Real Strength: Side-Sewn Case Binding

Side-sewn diagram

To produce side-sewn products, thread is woven through book signatures as shown above. The result is one of the strongest binding styles available.

Children’s books, educational books and reference books are just a few products that benefit from the strength and durability of case binding (also known as library binding). The side-sewn hard binding capabilities of Muscle Bound Bindery give you plenty of design flexibility; we can produce books with a range of page counts with equal quality and speed. To be sure your products meet your quality and functionality needs, here are a few planning tips to keep in mind:

The Side Sewing Difference
Not all case-bound books are created equal. At © 2010 Muscle Bound Bindery, we gather and side-sew signatures to create the text block. In the side sewing process, threads are sewn through the full bulk of the text block and endsheets approximately 3/16” from the spine. Cloth reinforcement is applied to both endsheets prior to sewing, which further enhances strength and durability. This allows us to produce a strong, durable side-sewn book block from approximately 5/8” down to 1/8” or less.

A Good Case
From a design standpoint, the case is the focus of the book. A turned-edge process is used to wrap printed and laminated paper, book cloth or other material around a board to decorate the covers and spine. Foil stamping, printed dust jackets and a wide variety of cloths and finishes can be used to further enhance the case decoration. Endsheets are available in standard white or a variety of colors, which can be ordered to meet the design specifications of your project. To add greater appeal to inside covers, customers may print and supply endsheets. When planning self-printed endsheets, check with Muscle Bound for layout requirements that can make production more efficient.

Planning Tip – Ask us for a ready-to-use layout: Case binding projects can be complex to plan. If you need guidance, give us a call and tell us the basic specifications of your book, such as page count, bleeds, and trim size. We’ll be happy to supply you with a layout template for cover wraps, dust jackets and your graphics.
